TropiChat, an ongoing series that features conversations with renowned Latin American filmmakers, presents a talk with one of Brazil's most legendary directors, Carlos Diegues, whose has made outstanding and prominent contributions to Brazilian film culture. The conversation is between Diegues and distinguished film programmer, producer, and exhibition curator Fabiano Canosa, presently living between Rio de Janeiro and New York.
Born in the Northeast region of Brazil in 1940, Carlos Diegues is one of the founders of the influential Cinema Novo movement. His first feature films, Ganga Zumba (1964) and A Grande Cidade (1966), show the dream for a more just world. He then made Os Herdeiros (1969), Joanna Francesa (1973) and Xica da Silva (1976) which inaugurated a period of popularity for Brazilian cinema. This recognition was further strengthened by the success of Chuvas de Verão (1978), Bye Bye Brasil (1980), Quilombo (1984) and Um Trem Para as Estrelas (1987), presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Diegues exploration of popular culture continued in Veja Esta Canção (1994) and Orfeu (1999). More recently, the director’s O Maior Amor do Mundo won the prize for best film at the Montreal Film Festival, 2006. Carlos Diegues has been intimately involved in the production of the re-figured classic Cinema Novo omnibus film, 5 vezes Favela. The new film, 5 vezes Favela, agora por nos mesmos, will have its first screening during Premiere Brazil! 2010 following its World Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
