Muralism without Walls: Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros in the United States, 1927-1940 by Anna Indych-López (University of Pittsburgh Press)

Speakers:  Renato González Mello (Professor and Researcher at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), Carla Stellweg (Professor, School of Visual Arts), and Robert Storr (Dean of the School of Art at Yale University). Moderated by Anna Indych-López (Associate Professor at The City College of New York and The Graduate Center, CUNY)

By considering the visual construction of the Mexican Revolution, 1930s exhibition culture, and portable frescoes, the publication Muralism without Walls investigates how U.S. perceptions of Mexican cultural identity shaped the muralists’ creative processes and politics. Panelists will examine the introduction of Mexican muralism to the United States and the challenges faced by the artists, their medium, and the political overtones of their work in a new society.
