The young Orquesta Típica Imperial, comprised of three bandoneons, three violins, violoncello, double bass and piano was created within the Orquesta Típica tradition and continues the evolution of the genre. The OTI performs original arrangements of traditional tangos by Bardi, Villoldo, Troilo, and Piazzolla, as well as new compositions by members of the ensemble. They have released three albums, starting with La Máquina Tanguera (Tango Machine) in 2003 and has participated in the movie El último aplauso (The last applause), directed by Germán Kral. OTI has performed extensively in Europe and Latin America, and this will be their first tour of the U.S.

The "Orquesta Típica," is the standard ensemble of the Golden Age of tango, and occupies a position similar to that of the Big Band among Jazz groups. The first recordings of such ensembles, which included strings, bandoneons and piano, date from the 1910s. For the next 40 years, until the appearance of the Nuevo Tango, the Orquestas Típicas were the central attraction in dance halls, radios and recordings and the main vehicle for the development of tango. The group includes Claudio Keller, Mariela Martins and Federico Morgan on violins; Damián Pais on cello; Pablo Bernaba, Nicolás Fontana and Matilde Vitullo on bandoneón; Gerardo Martinez Argibay on piano; Jano Seitun on bass, and singer Iván Espeche.

This concert is presented in cooperation with Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing.

Due to the overwhelming response, unfortunately we are no longer able to accept reservations for this event. Feel free to come on a stand-by basis. For more information, email culture@americas-society.org.
